Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions that we get. Please contact us with any other questions that you might have in regards to ordering and we’ll be happy to assist.
The scriptures we offer as new are purchased from the church Distribution Center. That means if The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints offers the scriptures, we can use them. We currently use the 2013 Editions of the Standard Works as printed by the church.
We also offer the option to send in your scriputures (of any denomination) to get rebound.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints owns the copyright to that logo and have asked other entities to not use it on commercial products as they are not made by the church (read more here). We respect those laws and the wishes of the Church on the matter. The scriptures inside however do remain intact and therefore carry all standard features found in the Standard Works.
Each set of scriptures we produce is carefully rebound by hand using traditional bookbinding methods and full-grain genuine leather.
Because our work is handmade and uses natural materials, every set is truly one of a kind.
Full-Grain Leather:
We use full-grain leather, which is the highest grade of genuine leather. Unlike synthetic or heavily corrected leather, full-grain hides retain their natural character. This means you may see natural grain variation, small markings, or subtle color differences. These features are not defects but part of the authenticity and beauty of real leather.
Handcrafted Binding:
Our bindings are completed by hand rather than by automated manufacturing processes. While we maintain high quality standards and carefully inspect every set before shipping, slight variations can occur from piece to piece. These small differences are a natural part of handcrafted work.
Hand-Set Name Embossing:
Personalized names are embossed using traditional metal letter type. Each letter is individually set and pressed by hand. Because this process is done manually, there is a normal alignment and spacing tolerance between letters. Minor variations are expected and are part of the character of hand-set embossing.
Our goal is to produce beautiful, durable scripture bindings that will last for many years while honoring the craftsmanship involved in traditional bookbinding.
Yes! We offer a set of images that we feel are the most common, or you can send in a custom image or work with us in what you're looking to do.
There are additional charges for custom artwork based on the size of the stamp and the complexity of the art work requested.
Names of the books on the spine, and the name on the front cover are included in the base pricing of our products.
We have several foil color options to choose from for embossing as well. By default we emboss in gold or silver to go with the page gilding of the book but you can also choose to emboss in a variety of colors such as red, purple, black, green, blue, pink, etc. Please contact us to discuss those options.
When you order a new custom set of scriptures or hymn books, we purchase them from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Distribution Center to fulfill the order.
Currently, the church only offers scriptures and the pocket size hymns book with gold page gilding and the normal size hymns book (about 6"x9") does not have page gilding. Because of this, we need to go through an external and costly process to gild the pages or convert the gold into silver page gilding.
We mail the books to an out of state vendor for the process. Our vendor must cut off the gold page gilding and with fresh gild-free page edges, our vendor then applies the silver gilding (a process that would resemble painting).
For the scriptures, the page margin is about ½ of an inch to start with. When using an unindexed book version (without thumb index tab cuts), about 1/16 of an inch is cut from the page edges. If using a book with the thumb index tab cuts, about 3/8 of an inch would need to be cut from the right page margin. That doesn’t leave enough clearance without worrying about the printed words possibly get cut off too. For this reason, we only offer this service for the regular size scriptures (about 5”x7”) and not the large size (about 6”x9”) because the church only offers an unindexed version in the regular size.
Subsequently, our turnaround time for this process can take up to 8-12 weeks.
** We don’t offer the option any more to get thumb index tab cuts on the edges of the pages after the silver gilding is done. The vendor we used for that process sadly had to close their business. We have not been able to find another company with a reasonable price to offer the service to our customers.
Because we use top quality leathers and demand fluctuates, we currently aim to complete orders within a 7-9 week lead time, but that is not a guaranteed time. Please call if lead time on orders is a concern. We are dedicated to improving methods and finding suppliers to improve on this time. However, we are more committed to quality than speed. Rush orders can be requested, there is an additional cost to rush your order, call to discuss your scenario. Silver gilding adds an additional 2-4 week lead time to an order due to the added process of re-gilding the gold scriptures. These are not guaranteed times, but rather an estimate. Times will vary based on demand and leather supply.
Not necessarily. Price is effected by size of the scriptures, gilding, and other custom requests. Color does not change the price, unless a color is requested that is not listed on our color page. Custom leather colors can be arranged and price will be determined based on special order. From time to time there will be special colors/styles but the price will be reflected should that be the case. Call if you have any questions.
The photos on our website are examples of our work.
Because each set of scriptures is rebound by hand and made with natural full-grain leather, every piece will have its own unique character.
Grain patterns, natural markings, and slight dye lot (color) variations may differ from the photos.
These differences are part of what makes real leather beautiful and ensure that no two bindings are exactly the same.
Our cancellation policy allows you to cancel your order within 72 hours of placing it if needed. After that time, cancellations may not be possible.
For requests for changes, please email us at info@customldsscriptures.com to ask about a change because there still might be time to make changes before production has started.
We send a separate manual email confirmation within about 24–48 hours after your order is placed so you can double check your order details and make sure everything was entered correctly. If there are any errors in the selections or information provided, this is a good opportunity to let us know.
If we do not hear back, we will proceed with the order as submitted.
This email may also include additional information or questions we have regarding your order to ensure it is made to your liking. Please check your junk or spam folder if you do not see the email in your inbox.
Yes, but there is no change in price as a result. We will return any extra unused leather. We cannot bind in all leathers and sizes. So before purchasing a leather, please call to confirm that we are able to use the leather you want.
We can bind scriptures for any size scriptures. The church offers a regular size (about 5″ x 7″) and large size (about 6″ x 9″). The church has discontinued the compact size and so we will only be able to offer to rebind your existing compact size scriptures. Pricing is on our pricing page. For pricing of other sizes not listed, please contact us.
The new books we bind are purchased through the church’s Distribution Center.
The regular size (5"x7") with gold page gilded editions have the option of thumb index tabs or unindexed.
The large print (6"x9") with gold page gilded editions are only the thumb index tab versions.
All sales are final. Each set of scriptures are made to order. If color is a concern, customers can request samples of the leathers prior to ordering so as to ensure colors and combinations prior to ordering.
Yes, we offer e-gift certificates. You can pre-pay a set amount and we issue a document through email as something you can print out and give to whomever you wish. When the recipient wants to redeem the e-gift certificate, they will enter the code we send in the document and use that towards their scriptures. E-gift certificates are good until redeemed.
We are an internet based company and don’t have a storefront. We started in Utah but have moved since then and are now in Alabama. For the time being, we are not offering local pick up or drop off. Currently, you can mail your scriptures to us if having them rebound and we will be shipping all orders once completed. If you would like to physically see samples of leather feel free to email us at info@customldsscriptures.com with the list of colors and your mailing address. We will mail up to 10 leather samples.
Each set of scriptures are made to order and personalized therefore all sales are final.
Because each set of scriptures is custom bound by hand using full-grain genuine leather, every piece is unique. Natural leather may contain small variations such as grain differences, natural markings, or minor imperfections that are part of the character of real leather. Likewise, because our bindings are handmade, slight variations may occur from one set to another. We hold our work to high standards and do our best to carefully inspect every set before it is shipped.
Small natural marks in the leather or subtle handmade variations are considered normal and are not treated as defects.
If your scriptures arrive with a clear craftsmanship issue or damage that falls outside of these normal characteristics, please contact us within 7 days of receiving them. We want you to be happy with your scriptures and will work with you on a reasonable solution.
Due to the custom nature of our work, returns for preference or natural leather variation are generally not accepted.
Names are embossed using traditional hand-set metal letter type. Each letter is individually placed and pressed by hand rather than produced by a digital or automated stamping process.
Because of this traditional method, there is a small and normal alignment tolerance between letters.
Slight variations in spacing or alignment may occur and are considered a natural part of hand-crafted work.
We take great care when setting and embossing each name.
Minor variations are expected with hand-set type and are not considered defects, but rather part of the character of a handmade binding.
Full-grain leather is the highest quality leather available because it retains the natural surface of the hide.
As a result, it may include natural characteristics such as grain variation, small wrinkles, healed scars, or subtle texture changes.
These natural markings are not defects. They are a normal part of genuine leather and are considered a mark of authenticity rather than a flaw.
We use full-grain genuine leather because of its durability, beauty, and longevity.
Unlike synthetic materials or heavily processed leather, full-grain leather maintains its natural strength and character.
Our goal is to create scripture bindings that will last for many years and age gracefully.
